30 Everyday Household Items You Can Use In WitchcraftWitchcraft doesn’t require fancy, glittery wands, swords or chalices. Your altar doesn’t have to look like a scene from Game of Thrones (unless you want it to). In fact, there are everyday household items that most people have in their house that can be used in witchcraft. These household staples are just as powerful as a store-bought magical tool (if not moreso). So get ready to check around your house for these magical items and get to witchin’! 1. SugarAlmost everyone has a bowl or canister of sugar in their kitchen. But did you know sugar has magical properties? Sugar comes from a plant called sugar cane that’s been grown in the South for centuries. Use sugar in love spells or to sweeten someone’s attitude. Adding a teaspoon to a self-love ritual bath sweetens your demeanor and increases your personal self-esteem. 2. MirrorHave you read our article about haunted and magic mirrors? Mirrors are connected to water and represent our emotions, intuition, and dreams. BUT mirrors can also be portals to other worlds. Use mirrors in candle spells to reflect magick back at a person, scry your future in the mirror, and cast a little glamour magick while looking in the mirror. Mirrors in the bedroom promote sensuality and mirrors facing the front door protect the house from negative energy. 3. CandlesThis is an obvious one, but should be mentioned. If you can’t afford to go out and buy a bunch of new candles solely for witchcraft, use the candles you have around the house. Birthday candles and votives are great for candle spells! Candles also give off a magical ambiance and set the mood for casting and ritual. Still have a yankee jar candle you haven’t used? Repurpose for a longer spell. These are particularly great for seasonal workings (i.e. Evergreen candles for Winter joy and peace spells). Learn how to do candle spells here. 4. Ribbons and StringWhether it’s a rogue shoelace, ribbon, yarn or string, this is a staple any witch can use in her magick. The easiest magick with string is knot magick. But ribbons and string can also be used to draw out your magick circle on the floor, decorate the house for Beltane and Midsummer, or can be enchanted and worn on one’s person as an amulet or talisman. Not to mention you can tie up a spell bag or mojo bag with a piece of yarn or ribbon! Ribbons, lace, string, yarn, etc. magical properties include: binding, fate, creative projects, love, friendship, and more. 5. Refrigerator/FreezerSay what? How does one use the refrigerator or freezer in witchcraft? Easy! Are you dealing with a “hot” situation with angry relatives or co-workers? Write the situation and people involved on a piece of paper, roll it up, and pop it in the fridge to cool everyone down. The freezer works to “freeze” a fast-moving situation or stop a person from making any decisions. Don’t forget you can freeze a name or situation by putting it in water and popping it in the freezer. 6. BroomEveryone has a broom in their house for cleaning purposes. But the broom has been a magical tool of witches for centuries. Start at the front of the house and move counter-clockwise, sweep the negativity from each room out the back door! Turn the broom bristles up when not in use, especially if it’s behind a door or in a corner. Never take an old broom to your new home. Leave it or bury it. Witches also use brooms to cleanse ritual space before a ritual or spell working. 7. HoneyAlso found in the kitchen of many homes is a jar or bottle of honey. Honey has been used in the Hoodoo tradition for centuries to sweeten someone up. While sticky, honey can be used to dress a candle for a love spell (lightly), or spells can be covered in honey and sealed up in a jar. Honey is also a great offering to love gods and goddesses and the ocean. Anoint your power points to take on the likeness of the bee. 8. Jars and BottlesSpeaking of jars and bottles, why not save your pickle jars, spice bottles and other glass containers to use in future spells? Clean them out thoroughly, then cleanse them with smoke or the elements, before making witch bottles, jars, or storing your spell ingredients and herbs. There are SO many ways to use jars and bottles in witchcraft. 9. Tea KettleSuper easy magick involves making a simple cup of tea! Your tea kettle becomes a ritual tool for relaxation, medicine, and magick on a daily basis. Draw symbols of power over the tea kettle with your finger while waiting for the water to boil. Learn more about tea witchcraft here. Who doesn’t love the comforting whistle of grandma’s old tea kettle? That was magic in and of itself. 10. Stockpot or CrockpotCauldrons were once standard in our ancestors’ homes found at the hearth. Now our kitchen is the hearth of the house and our cauldrons are our pots and pans. Use your stockpot or crockpot to cook magickal meals or simmer magickal potpourris. I’ve also made herbal infusions and decoctions with my stockpot. And brew a floor wash in your stockpot before cleaning your floors! A more modern approach to the cauldron might also be the instant pot! 11. SoapAnd now you’re thinking is she crazy? Soap can be used in witchcraft? To that I say, of course! When washing in the morning or at night, use your bar of soap in a downwards fashion from head to feet to cleanse yourself of all negative vibes. You can even buy soaps made by witches for specific purposes! 12. ClothingEveryone has to wear clothes, right? Why not enchant your clothing before putting them on? Select certain colors for certain intentions. For example, wear pink when you want to increase the romance in your life. Wear green when you want to attract more money. Shoes and jewelry are also magical tools common in every household. Jewelry becomes protective amulets. Write or draw spells on the bottom of your shoes. Get creative! 13. ButtonsHave a jar of buttons you don’t know what to do with? Use the buttons in your witchcraft. Add them to your spell bags and adorn your poppets. Buttons make great eyes and noses for poppets. Sew buttons into a pattern or symbol inside a jacket or coat to align with a magical intention. NEVER pick up a button in your path…it’s bad luck! 14. FlourEvery house has a bag or canister of flour in the kitchen. Flour is typically made from wheat, rice or corn so it also carries the magical properties of the plant from which it’s made. Obviously, flour can be used to make magical breads and pies, BUT you can also use it to draw out circles and sigils on the ground. 15. BathtubIf you have a bathtub or shower, you have access to an incredibly magical experience. A safe place where you can connect with the water element. Take a shower to cleanse away negative vibes from the day, or add herbs and flowers to your bath to cast spells for money, success, love, etc. 16. Paper and PenEvery household has paper and pen or pencil, right? We take the ability to write for granted in modern times, but many of our ancestors were never taught how to write. Nor did they have access to paper and writing utensils. Write your spells on a piece of paper, then burn the paper to release the magick. You can also bury the paper, freeze it, cut it in shreds and watch it blow away, etc. Paper and pen are also important when keeping notes on spells and ritual. 17. BooksSpeaking of paper, books are magical items in many different ways. Not only do they educate and entertain us, but they can also be used in witchcraft. Press a special flower, plant, or feather in your favorite book. Later when you open the book, your magical item will fall out and bring you luck! Ask a question to the universe, then flip a book open to a random spot. Whatever sentence your eyes land on will be your answer! 18. MilkMilk is a staple in many family’s refrigerators. If you have cow’s milk, you have an ingredient with magical properties of motherhood, nourishment, protection and abundance. Cook or bake with it or add a bit of it to the bathtub. Almond and coconut milk also have magical properties related to the plants from which they are made. 19. SpicesI’ll bet you have a drawer or cabinet filled with random herbs and spices in your kitchen. If so, you have access to a plethora of magical herbs! Cinnamon, oregano, pepper, cumin, parsley, curry, cilantro, and basil are just a few of the magical herbs most people have right in their kitchen! Learn more about magical kitchen spices here. 20. Coffee PotYou know that wonderful machine that brews a magical potion every morning to wake us out of our slumber? Yeah, the coffee pot is just as magical as a cauldron! Enchant it by drawing a symbol in the air over top. Then sip your coffee and thank the coffee gods for energy and vitality! Add coffee or coffee beans to any spell to speed up and strengthen the results. 21. House PlantsI think a lot of people forget that house plants are just as magical as herbs or flowers in the garden! Succulents, ivies, and small trees all have their own magical properties. Gather fallen leaves and foliage, dry and use in your spells. Place a jade plant by the front door to bring in abundance. Etc. 22. SaltIs there anything more purifying and protective than salt? I bet you have some in your kitchen! If so, salt can be used in the bathtub, sprinkled around candles in spells, left in a bowl on the altar for purification, sprinkled in the corners of the house and on windowsills. And so much more! Go down the salt rabbit-hole, so to speak, and experiment with different types. There’s black lava salt, Himalayan pink, kosher salt, sea salt, and witch’s black salt (to name a few). 23. Ancestral HeirloomsDid your grandmother give you a quilt? Did you inherit a special item from your uncle or father? Ancestral heirlooms are some of the most powerful items to have in one’s home. They tie you directly to your ancestors! Place them on the ancestral altar or simply hold in your hand while praying to the ancestors to bridge the gap between you and your passed loved ones. Add their energy to spells and divination sessions. 24. SeashellsYou know those seashells you gathered at the beach last summer? Are they sitting in a drawer somewhere not being used? Add them to the altar to represent the water element, encircle a candle to aid in fertility and water magic spells, include them in your own personal divination charm bag, or make them into a necklace for magical use. 25. Olive OilIf you have olive oil in your house, you have the ability to bless and anoint your home and magical tools. Dab a little on your index finger and draw protective symbols on the doorways and windows. You can also use olive oil to anoint your third eye and chakras before ritual. Infuse herbs into oils and use to anoint candles, tools, etc. Learn more about making herb-infused oils here. 26. Silver BowlIf you have a silver bowl or vase, pour water in it and leave it to charge under the next full moon. BAM. Instant moon water. Silver bowls and plates are also great for candle spells and offerings. 27. Animal FigurinesMy great grandmother gave me a small owl figurine made of glass. I now keep it in my living room and it watches over my magical workings. If you have any animal figurines around the house, you can turn these into your magical guardians. Click here to learn more. 28. KnifeOne of the first magical tools I ever used was a kitchen knife. Back when I was a teenager, Wicca was the main witchcraft movement and it “required” using an athame for many rituals and spells. If you have an old kitchen knife, you have an athame. Even if you’re not Wiccan, a knife can be used to carve symbols and letters into candles. It can be used to cut things in half like twine, string, etc. It can also be used to draw symbols into the earth for ritual. 29. BellWhether small or large, a bell is a household item that has cleansing properties. Ring it a few times and send negative energy and spirits running. It can also be used to signal the start to a ritual or gathering. 30. Sewing MachineDo you have a sewing machine? Time to make magical altar cloths, tablecloths, curtains, clothing and more! I’ve also used my sewing machine to make magical cloaks and poppets. Cleanse it and enchant it for added magical effects! 31. Stove and OvenThe oven in your kitchen is the modern-day replacement of the hearth (or fireplace) of our ancestors. Treat it as such. Craft herbal concoctions on the stove. Bake bread infused with your herbs and intentions in the oven. Make candles on the stove. It represents the fire element and is the center of the home. And if you have a gas stove with an open-flame…even better! A grill can also serve as a magical household appliance.
Daily Pagan Rituals: List of 30+ SIMPLE Everyday TraditionsWhen we embark on a spiritual path, sometimes the path gets twisted and we feel we lose our connection to the Divine. Sometimes we’re too busy with the physical to cater to our spiritual needs. But there’s ways to include simple daily pagan rituals into your routine without a fuss. You don’t have to do every single one every day, pick and choose a few that will fit into your schedule. The key is to create a habit of your daily pagan rituals so that you don’t forget. Without further adieu, here’s our list of 30+ simple, daily pagan rituals. 30+ Daily Pagan Rituals1. Light a candleMany of us pyromaniacs already love burning candles in our homes, so why not make it a part of your daily pagan rituals? Light a candle and say a quick prayer of gratitude to your god or goddess or ancestors. Or leave an LCD candle burning (I believe the energy from batteries lends energy to our gods and ancestors, too!) Then go about your day. 2. Offerings for the GodsOfferings are simple. They can be anything your god or goddess would enjoy: food, beverage, water, incense, herbal blends, art, crystals, candle flame, dance and poetry. Some gods enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning. Some enjoy a portion of your dinner at night. While others prefer the scent of patchouli incense. Incorporate offerings into your daily routine and watch the blessings roll in! 3. Offerings for the AncestorsSame as above – make offerings to your ancestors one of your daily pagan rituals. Did your granny like to steal sweet n’ lows? Add a couple to your ancestor altar for her. Did your Uncle enjoy bonfires? Light a candle for him in the evening. A refreshing cup of water, a shotglass of liquor, a bowl of tobacco. 4. Rise to Greet the SunIf you’re an early riser, this should be a simple one – rising to greet the sun. Sit outside with your coffee and watch the sun rise. Bask in the glory of the star that gives life to this planet. Bonus: getting out into the sunlight within one hour of waking aids in regulating our circadian rhythms. Which means, you’ll sleep better at night! 5. Runic Stadhas or YogaEdred Thorsson talks about runic stadhas in his book on the Elder Futhark. Stadhas are similar to yoga positions. So whether you enjoy yoga or feel a connection to the runes, try physical positions like the runic stadhas or yoga on a daily basis. Even if you only do one or two in the morning to get your day started or in the evening to relax and connect. 6. Go for a WalkSimply going for a walk outside is enough to relax you and re-connect with Mother Earth. Don’t have a lot of time to fit in a walk? Instead of sitting at your desk for lunch break, take your lunch outside and go for a walk afterward. Even if it’s only a ten minute walk. I also enjoy walking through ny garden in the evenings. Go barefoot and ground yourself naturally. 7. Dream JournalingKeep a dream journal at your bedside. Before you even set foot on the floor in the morning, record your dreams. This is a simple, yet effective way to tune into your higher self and gods – through dreams. The more you journal your dreams, the more dreams you will recall. And the closer you’ll become to your spirit guides and gods. 8. MeditateYou don’t have to meditate for an hour or even a half an hour. Pop in a set of earbuds and listen to a ten minute relaxing guided meditation for free on YouTube. 9. Nature Signs and OmensThroughout your day, pay attention to any nature signs or omens. This could be anything – a praying mantis on the windshielf, a blue jay that seems to repetitively visit you, a cloud in the shape of a heart, a snail that’s entered the house, etc. The gods and ancestors often use nature to communicate with us. This is one of the most enriching daily pagan rituals in my practice. 10. Light IncenseJust as you light a candle for your gods or simply to re-connect, light incense on a daily basis. Something about the scent of incense in the air puts me into an otherworldly state of mind. It is relaxing and grounding, too. 11. Read a Spiritual BookTake fifteen minutes out of your day to read a spiritual book. Whatever topic you’re studying in the realm of paganism, set aside a little time daily to read and absorb what you are reading. If you don’t have time to read a book, listen to an audiobook while commuting to or from work. 12. Love Your PetsWhether you have a dog, horse, or a hamster, set aside some time every day to love on your pets. This doesn’t seem like a pagan ritual, but anything done with intention and in a routine can be a ritual. And what’s more pagan than loving on animals? 13. Light a Red Candle in the KitchenKeep a red candle in your kitchen. Light it in honor of the ancestors who came before you, who cooked hearthside to feed and nourish their families just as you do today! 14. Smoke-Cleanse YourselfOne of those self-love daily pagan rituals is smoke-cleansing yourself. You don’t have to do this daily, but I promise if you do take up the practice, you won’t regret it. This practice removes the negative debris stuck in your aura, helps to relax you, and to ground you after a long day of work. 15. Love Your FamilyOne of the most pagan things to do is to honor and love your family. Think back hundreds of years ago – what did your ancestors value back then? Life, love, and family. They focused on survival and did what they had to do to feed and care for their families. And it’s a good thing too, because you’re here because of them! Honor your ancestors by loving your family every day. Spend quality time with your family as a daily pagan ritual. Othala. 16. Write in Journal / BOSKeep a record of your spiritual journey, traditions, and thoughts by writing them down in a spiritual journal or Book of Shadows. Take five minutes a day to write something down – even if it's just your emotions or your thoughts in that moment. 17. Wear a StoneChoose a stone to wear on a daily basis. This is a simple, small daily pagan ritual to do in the morning. If you can’t wear it, then put it in your pocket. Choose stones for protection, grounding, energy, etc. 18. Pray to the GodsTake time in the morning while you’re getting ready for the day or take time just before falling asleep to say a simple prayer to the gods. Prayers of gratitude are best. The more grateful we are for the gods’ presence in our lives, the more blessings roll in. 19. Visit the GardenWhether you keep an elaborate garden or just have a few plants and trees in your yard, take some time in the early morning or the evening to pay the garden a visit. You never know what wisdom the plants, trees, and wildlife have to share with you. I find garden visits comforting, peaceful, and enlightening. 20. ExerciseHow is exercise a daily pagan ritual? In this modern day and age, everyone is so busy and sedentary. We don’t have the time to work out. But here’s the thing – we were gifted with these bodies by the gods/universe/ancestors and so we should be grateful for them and care for them just as we care for our spirits. Even if you just go for a run in the morning, do something to get your heart pumping every day. Make the gods proud. Prepare to go to Valhalla. 21. Brew a Cup of TeaMake brewing tea a daily ritual. Enjoy choosing your own loose leaf herbs, hearing the tea kettle whistle on the stove, and then pouring the hot water over the herbs. Sit down, be quiet, and sip your tea while waiting for the Divine to speak to you. 22. Smoke-Cleanse Your HouseAlong the same lines of smoke-cleansing yourself, cleanse your house to rid it of any negative vibes or spirits. A quick session does the trick, even if its only ten minutes. Don’t forget to open the windows, or else you’ll piss those demons right off. 23. Rune or Card of the DaySomething I enjoy doing in the morning, draw one rune or one tarot/oracle card for the day. It might give you a sneak peek of what’s to come or just provide some sage advice. Either way – drawing one rune or card of the day is one of the easiest and enlightening daily pagan rituals. 24. Use Herbs in CookingHave a garden with herbs or vegetables? Use them in your cooking on a daily basis. If you don’t have a garden, choose spices from your kitchen cabinet for specific purposes. For example – cinnamon for money. Sugar to sweeten up situations and people. Rosemary for love. Etc. 25. Pray to the AncestorsJust as you pray to the gods, pray to your ancestors as well. They enjoy hearing from you too. It doesn’t have to be a complicated prayer. Talk to them as if they’re right there with you. 26. Freshen Up Your AltarClean up your altar on a daily basis. This means dump those ashes off your incense burner. Dust off any dirt or debris. Refresh your offerings. Make your altar a place worthy of the gods and ancestors. 27. Gaze at the MoonOn nights when the clouds are clear, go outside and gaze at the moon. Feel the lunar rays on your skin. 28. Plan the Next SabbatTake time to plan the next sabbat. Write down ideas on traditions, rituals, food, etc. This is a fun daily pagan ritual to do with the whole family (if they are pagan, as well). 29. Call a Pagan FriendOn days you feel you need an extra boost of comfort or confidence, call a pagan friend. There’s nothing like talking to someone of like-mind and kindred spirit. 30. Ground and CenterWith how crazy life can get, making grounding and centering a part of your daily pagan rituals can really do wonders for your health and wellbeing. Even if you touch a tree before going inside or walk around outside with barefeet, both of these rituals help. 31. Plan the Next EsbatJust as planning the next Sabbat can be fun, so can planning your next Esbat. Plan an aura-cleansing bath on the New Moon – what herbs will you use? Will you use sea salt or epsom salt? Plan to do a releasing ritual on the next Waning Moon. What will you do next full moon? Write down your thoughts and ideas. 32. Research Your God/GoddessIn addition to reading a spiritual book once a day, spend a few minutes doing further research on your god or goddess. This can be online or in books. Read your god or goddess’ mythology, folklore, and history. This gives honor to your god or goddess and enriches your relationship with them. 33. Listen to MusicMusic is important to us all. Depending on your mood, it can relax or energize you. As a daily pagan ritual, play some pagan or witchy music instead of the typical pop or rock you might listen to. If you’re into a Norse or Germanic path, I recommend listening to Heilung, Danheim, Eivor, and Wardruna. There’s also a ton of Celtic music on Spotify, YouTube, Pandora, etc. Try music that makes you feel connected to the old ways.
12+ SIMPLE Daily Evening Rituals for Witches and PagansIt seems everyone’s talking about daily morning rituals. I don’t know about you, but as a mother, my mornings are pretty busy. So my quiet spiritual time is typically in the late evenings. Not to mention, some folks just aren’t morning people. Are you ready to add more spirituality and magick to your evenings? Here we detail our favorite daily evening rituals for busy witches and pagans. The Magick of EVENING TimeSure, the sun rises in the morning and provides it’s own special kind of magick. But the sun sets in the evening, it’s rays kissing the land with warmth and displaying a beautiful array of colors. As the sun sets, we say goodbye to the day and welcome the night. The evening time is liminal: it’s not quite day time nor is it quite night time yet. And when we work magick or perform ritual in a liminal time, it is that much easier to pierce the spiritual veil and see through to the Otherworld. Working magick in the evening is a great way to harness the sun’s energy, work with spirits like the fae, and prepare for night. 12 Simple Evening Rituals for Witches & PagansDepending on your work schedule and who’s around in the evenings, adjust these rituals to meet your personal lifestyle and needs. Or create your own. 1. Nature WalkDon’t have time in the morning to get outside for a quick walk? Try taking a nature walk in the evening. After the dinner rush and everyone’s homework is done, get outside during the twilight hours and enjoy what nature has to offer. If you can catch the sunset, even better! It’ll relax you, provide exercise, and help you connect to your pagan path. 2. Altar TimeIf you’re anything like me, I’m too busy in the mornings or during the day to spend a few minutes at my altar. So I typically add my altar time to my evenings. I light a candle or incense and refresh my offerings to my ancestors and gods. I might also say a quick prayer. Tailor this daily evening ritual to fit your needs and preferences. 3. Water Your PlantsIf you have a garden, the evening is a wonderful time to water them. Again, it gets you outside and connects you with the plants in your garden. Plus, the water is more likely to soak into the ground rather than evaporate during the hot summer months. While you’re watering, check for new growth, new wildlife, etc. 4. Daily Evening Tea RitualsOne of my favorite daily evening rituals for witches and pagans involves a delicious cup of hot tea. Heating the kettle, selecting the herbs, and brewing the tea is a ritual in and of itself. Then hold the hot cup in your hands and curl up in your favorite chair for a relaxing moment. While drinking your evening tea… 5. Draw a CardAnother great daily ritual is to do a one-card reading for yourself. This can be tarot, oracle or even runes. Whatever divination you prefer. Ask a question, pull a card, and meditate on the answer. 6. Ritual BathIsn’t it nice when the kids are in bed, the pets are fed, and you can take a relaxing bath before bed? Yes, one of my favorite daily evening rituals is a long ritual bath. Add some herbs, salt, crystals and candles. Pop open a book OR set your intentions while bathing. Ritual baths can be used for: cleansing/banishing, healing, drawing love to yourself, self-love, drawing money/success, and of course rest. I also enjoy listening to relaxing music and having a glass of wine from time to time. 7. Read a BookBefore bed, it’s best to turn off the electronics. Electronics such as TV, smart phones or tablets often trick our brains into thinking it’s still day time. This means it’s harder to fall asleep at night. SO exchange the TV time for reading time. Choose a witchy or pagan book as part of your daily evening rituals to grow your spirituality. And you’ll sleep better! 8. Mindful MealsWe live in a world where everything is rushed. Many of us even rush through cooking dinner, eating it and then cleaning up after. Instead of rushing, when you have time, take your time. Put thought into the ingredients you use. Sit down and have a meal with your family, together, with the TV off. Have the whole family clean up after the meal is over. This is a great daily evening ritual to bring everyone together and bring more love into the household. 9. Essential Oil DiffuserI keep an essential oil diffuser in my bedroom next to my bed. At night, before going to sleep, I diffuse lavender or eucalyptus oil for peaceful, relaxing vibes. It eases me into sleep and makes me feel extra witchy! It’s the perfect daily evening ritual to end my day. You should try it. 10. Prayer & Gratitude as Daily Evening RitualBefore falling asleep at night, pray to your ancestors or gods. Thank them for everything you have in life. Even if you just lay in bed and think of all the things you’re grateful for, you’ll be a happier person the next morning! This is a free, simple daily evening ritual anyone can do. 11. Working with the FaeriesSince the evening is a liminal time, it’s also considered a twilight period. The faeries are particularly active during the twilight hours, including in the evening. Sit outside and just be open to receiving. You may feel or even see a faery dancing in the setting sun’s rays. In addition, providing offerings in your garden for the fae or on a faery altar is appropriate as an evening ritual. 12. Sweep the Front PorchThis seems like a mundane task. And it is. But it’s also extremely magical. In the evening, sweep your front porch from right to left to remove any negative energy that may have entered the household during the day. Sweeping the front porch is like re-setting the energy to allow positive energy to flow overnight and the next day. Place your broom by the front door with the bristles up. Keeping the broom bristles up brings good luck and health.
