Mel Robbins’ routine for a successful, confident morning![]() The internet is full of tips on how to be more self-confident. Not all of them work. Maybe you’ve tried looking in the mirror and telling yourself you love yourself – it felt fake and didn’t help. Maybe you’ve tried saying daily affirmations for confidence – they didn’t work so well either. To each habit for confidence, you added a little reluctance. At the same time, maybe your friends were helped by the above practices and you wondered why they didn’t work for you. Well, we are different and react to different things. Nothing new, right? However, it turns out there is a habit for self-confidence that really works and it’s based on science. Here’s what it is! The High Five Habit. High five yourself in the mirror, every morning! Before you look askance at this practice, you need to understand how it works psychologically. Mel Robbins, the author of the book that tells the story of the practice, says the habit is based on neurobics – a complex system of exercises for the brain. “In this type of exercise, you choose a routine activity, like looking in the mirror every morning. Then, you combine the activity with two other elements. It’s something unexpected that involves your senses – a high five with yourself – and an associated emotion you want to feel – it can be confidence, strength, excitement and security,” explains the author. ![]() In other words, when you high five yourself in the mirror (something you don’t normally do), the mind will associate the action with the message “bravo!”, “I trust you”, “you can do it”, “I’m proud of you!”. What other benefits does this habit bring to your self-confidence? As well as giving you confidence, the morning high five can give you more enthusiasm for the day ahead. Connecting to yourself will make you even more present, so you will approach things with authenticity, in line with your real self. Plus, the habit will help you love yourself more and be more understanding of yourself, even on those days when you’ve been harshly critical and in a bad mood until evening. The high five moment Now is the time to look in the mirror, no matter how you feel. Look yourself in the eye, breathe, smile if you feel it, then high five yourself. You can even put an it post on the mirror to help you never forget your routine. Get into your sportswear or clothes for a new day immediately Even though pyjamas are very comfortable, staying dressed in them tells your brain “we can stay inactive, the day hasn’t started yet”. Instead, if you get dressed in your sports gear, you’ll immediately be motivated to do some exercise. And if you have to start working out, dress in casual clothes that you feel confident in. It’s a habit that makes a difference! HAVING A MORNING ROUTINEHaving a morning routine can transform your day, setting a positive and productive tone before life’s demands start pulling you in various directions. Beginning the day with a predictable series of steps can help ground you, minimize stress, and create a sense of calm and control. Whether it’s taking a few minutes to stretch, journaling, or simply making your bed, these small actions signal to your mind that you’re ready to start the day with intention. A consistent morning routine can also help reduce decision fatigue, making it easier to get into a productive mindset without feeling overwhelmed. Starting the day with physical activity, like stretching or exercising, can be an excellent way to increase energy and focus. Movement increases blood flow, awakens muscles, and triggers the release of endorphins, helping to improve your mood and alertness. Whether it’s a brief yoga session or a brisk walk outside, this part of a routine doesn’t need to be intense or long; even five or ten minutes of stretching can make a big difference. Physical activity can also help regulate your sleep patterns over time, making it easier to fall asleep and wake up at the same time each day, further strengthening your morning routine. Incorporating mindfulness practices such as meditation, breathing exercises, or even a few minutes of quiet reflection can also enhance a morning routine. Taking time to focus on the present moment helps reduce stress and anxiety, allowing you to start your day with a clearer mind and a more grounded spirit. Mindfulness practices can be as simple as spending five minutes in silence, listening to calming music, or practicing gratitude. These moments help set a positive tone for the day, creating a buffer against stress before you engage with the outside world. Another beneficial component of a morning routine is dedicating time to personal development, like reading, journaling, or setting goals for the day. Engaging in activities that promote growth, such as reading a few pages from a book or writing in a gratitude journal, can help you feel more focused and motivated. This mental preparation keeps your mind stimulated and aligned with your broader goals, serving as a reminder of what matters most to you. Journaling, for instance, can help clear your mind and organize your thoughts, making it easier to tackle your tasks with confidence and purpose. Lastly, nourishing your body with a balanced breakfast is crucial for a successful morning routine. Eating a nutritious meal after waking up provides your body with the energy it needs to maintain focus and productivity throughout the day. Choose foods that provide sustained energy, such as whole grains, protein, and fresh fruits or vegetables. Hydrating with water or a warm beverage like herbal tea can further help wake you up and prepare your body for the day ahead. This final step reinforces self-care and makes sure your physical needs are met, rounding off a routine that not only improves your morning but supports a fulfilling day overall.
