THE ART OF CHANGEI recently read the book, The Art of Change by Nancy Levin. In it, she provides a powerful perspective on navigating transitions and changes in your life. On the first page, she reminds us that, “Reinvention isn’t about scrubbing your life clean of any signs that you’ve lived it. It’s about returning to the essence of who you actually are.” Well, isn't that the truth (she said as a statement and not a question). But, what does that mean, exactly? First, let me tell you what I think it isn’t because reinvention often gets misconstrued as starting over from scratch. In reality, it’s not about erasing the past or disregarding the experiences that have shaped us. Rather, it’s about rediscovering and embracing the core of who we truly are. So, here are some things I did (and you can too) to step away from life's scrub brush and uncover your essence. 1. Reflect on Your Life’s Journey Take time to reflect on your experiences, achievements, and even the challenges you've faced. These moments have contributed to the essence of who you are. Journaling can be a powerful tool in this process. Write about your proudest moments, the lessons learned from hardships, and the passions that have driven you. 2. Embrace Your Accomplishments Recognize the incredible milestones you’ve reached. Whether it’s a successful career, raising a family, or personal achievements, these are integral parts of your identity. Celebrate these accomplishments. Rather than feeling that they belong solely to the past, I’d encourage you to make them a part of your future. 3. Reconnect with Your Passions Think back to the activities and interests that once brought you joy but may have been set aside due to life's demands. Retirement (or a new chapter) is an opportunity to rekindle these passions. Whether it’s painting, gardening, writing, pursuing any other hobby, or starting a new business, now is the time to immerse yourself in what you love. 4. Explore New Interests Reinvention also involves exploring new horizons. Think about something you’ve always wanted to try but never had time for. Whether it’s learning a new language, volunteering, traveling, or picking up a new sport, embracing new interests can be stimulating and fulfilling. 5. Build a Support Network Surround yourself with people who inspire and support you. Join groups or clubs related to your interests, and connect with others navigating a new chapter. Sharing experiences and encouragement can be incredibly empowering. 6. Rediscovering Purpose Purpose is a significant aspect of our identity. In retirement, your purpose may shift, but it’s never lost. Consider how you can contribute to your community, support loved ones, or mentor younger generations. It’s the perfect opportunity to share your experience and talent. Purpose can be found in the smallest acts of kindness and our connections with others. At the heart of reinvention is a return to your essence. This essence is the culmination of your values, passions, strengths, and the wisdom you've gained over the years. It’s about stripping away the roles and expectations that may have overshadowed your true self and embracing the woman you've always been. It’s not about negating your past. It’s about integrating the amazing parts of your past into a richer, fuller present and future. Your identity and purpose are not lost, they are simply evolving. You’re not starting from scratch, you’re starting from experience. So, step into this journey with confidence and curiosity. Rediscover the essence of who you are, and embrace the endless possibilities that lie ahead. Your life is an incredible book, and when you can return to your essence, you’ll be better able to design an amazing new chapter.
