Can you train a 2-year-old dog to go potty outside? Yes, you can potty train a dog of any age, but it may take more time and patience than training a puppy. Adult dogs generally need to go to the bathroom three to five times a day, with a maximum of six to eight hours between trips. Smaller breeds may need to go more frequently because they have smaller bladders and higher metabolisms. An adult dog's ability to “hold it” for several hours is what can make the process easier than it is for a puppy. This does not mean that you should force her to do so, however.
