It originated in India 2,500 years ago. Buddhists believe that:

Life is suffering
Humans can be free from suffering
Enlightenment is a state of inner peace and wisdom
Nirvana is a state of enlightenment
The Buddha's teachings are the Dharma
Consciousness continues after death
Death can be an opportunity for liberation
There is no eternal soul
The self is a collection of changing characteristics
Everything is impermanent

Buddhists believe that enlightenment can be achieved through:

Meditation
Spiritual and physical labor
Good behavior
Cultivating a lifestyle prescribed by the Buddha

Buddhists don't acknowledge a supreme god or deity. They also don't strictly forbid eating meat, but many choose not to in order to avoid causing suffering to animals.

These virtues generally fall into three categories.

What are the unforgivable sins in Buddhism?

The Dhammasangāni [5] regard five acts –

matricide
parricide
slaying an Arhat
slaying a Buddha and
causing division among priesthood

However, the Buddhists admit cases where committing an act which is generally considered to be sinful has not been looked upon as sins.

More simply put, suffering exists; it has a cause; it has an end; and it has a cause to bring about its end.

What does karma mean to Buddhists?

In the Buddhist tradition, karma refers to actions driven by intention (cetanā), a deed done deliberately through body, speech or mind, which leads to future consequences. The Nibbedhika Sutta, Anguttara Nikaya 6.63: Intention (cetana) I tell you, is kamma. Intending, one does kamma by way of body, speech, & intellect.
