We look outside of ourselves for love since that is how we found stability and love as kids. We received rewards for our good deeds. The truth is, the love you’re looking for can only come from within. 5 Easy Ways to Practice Self-Love When You Have a Busy ScheduleWake up. Check phone. Get dressed. Breakfast. Rush out the door. Work. Eat. Sleep. Repeat. Does that sounds familiar? It’s so easy to get caught up in our crazy, busy schedules and meeting the demands of others that sadly, we forget to look after ourselves along the way. Yes, having goals and pursuing your ambitions is important, but unless you nurture your inner well-being alongside those things, it’s likely that you’ll be left feeling pretty unfulfilled. This month I ran two self-love events (‘I Am Enough’ Dubai and Abu Dhabi) where we discussed the importance of practicing self-love and how a lack of self-love can hold you back in your career, relationships and health as well as it playing a big part when it comes to feeling unmotivated. I specialize in supporting professional women build their confidence and esteem, and practicing self-love is a big part of the process. Self-love doesn’t have to be difficult and it doesn’t have to take an hour of your day. Giving as little as 5 minutes of quality time to yourself can make the biggest difference to your day. To make it easy for you, I have put together a list of my 5 favorite ways to practice self-love and I hope you enjoy them too. 1. Be present Question. How often do you pause to notice the beauty in your day? One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is to be fully in the moment. Stop stressing about what you didn’t get done yesterday or worrying about all the things you need to do tomorrow. Just be in the here and now. One way to do this is by minimizing distractions i.e. by putting your phone or laptop away and focus on what you are doing in that very moment and just BREATHE. Notice the taste of your coffee, the color of the sky and give the conversation you’re having with your friend your full, undivided attention. Being mindful has a huge number of benefits to our health, both physically and mentally. 2. Practice gratitude There’s a lot of research out there showing just how much practicing gratitude can improve our psychological and physical health, our sleep and self-esteem. Practicing gratitude in the morning is such a beautiful way to start your day. I like to see it as ‘filling your own cup’ and really creating a sense of abundance within yourself. Comparison is the thief of joy (and confidence!) and so by focusing on what you don’t have will only drain your energy and keep you feeling as if you’re not enough. Start noticing all the great things you do have, even if it’s as simple as the food on your place and the fact that you have a bed to sleep on every night. 3. Dream big Oh I love this one! When we lack confidence and self-esteem, this is often reflected in the goals we set ourselves. If you continue to see your life as it is now, you’re more likely to stay at the level you are at now. Dare yourself and LOVE yourself enough to set goals for yourself that scare you, that excite you. It’s by dreaming big that you will find yourself being pulled by your vision and start taking the steps to get there, and hey, the key is to remember that it’s a process and will take time. Expecting instant results will only overwhelm you and be likely to leave you disappointed, which will knock your confidence. Get yourself a pen and paper now and write down some goals that both scare you and EXCITE you! 4. Forgive yourself Hey you, you do realize you’re HUMAN right? You are not meant to be perfect (there is no such thing as perfect anyway) and it’s okay for you to not get everything right every time. Rather than being hard on yourself, feeling guilt, having regrets, let it go and forgive yourself for the mistakes you’ve made and for the times you’ve been unkind to yourself. One way you can do this is by writing yourself a letter letting go of what you’ve been holding onto. 5. Write down 20 things you love about yourself This is one that many people struggle to do! Did you know that what you focus on grows? If you focus on the parts of yourself that you don’t like, that’s where your mind will constantly be drawn to. The relationship you have with yourself sets the tone for all the other relationships you have in your life. If you constantly speak negatively about yourself, you’ll more easily accept the same from others. Love yourself first. Remind yourself of what makes you great, what makes you YOU. Notice how you feel after writing the list and keep it somewhere where you can see it regularly.
