From Wednesday, November 10, 2021 through Sunday, November 21, 2021, the globe lanterns above Santa Monica Boulevard between N. Robertson Boulevard and Hancock Avenue will glow in blue, pink, and white. Transgender flags will be flown on the City’s medians where flags are currently displayed.

Transgender Awareness Week & Day of Remembrance

​Each year, Equality Virginia and countless other organizations throughout the Commonwealth observe Transgender Awareness Week (TAW) from November 13-19 . This week is dedicated to education about transgender and nonbinary communities as well as the important issues facing trans people across the globe. It is a time of celebration and of deepening our understanding. The week culminates with the Transgender Day of Remembrance and Resilience (TDORR), a worldwide gathering to honor the trans and nonbinary folks who have lost their lives due to anti-trans violence.

​We invite you to learn about those who were taken from us too soon, most of whom are Black and Latina trans women, and celebrate their life. We honor and lift up those who we have lost, while striving to empower and fight for those who are still with us. We also invite you to learn from Black trans and nonbinary community members in Virginia and elsewhere who deserve their flowers now! A great place to start is checking out these TIES 2020 and TIES 2021 keynote speakers.

​TIES 2021

​We are looking forward to the 8th annual Transgender Information & Empowerment Summit (TIES), which will take place from Wednesday, October 20 through Saturday, October 23! The conference is staying virtual for 2021. This was a long, thoughtful decision to protect the health and safety of everyone who loves TIES and to plan for the best event in these uncertain times. We saw how last year’s virtual format allowed more people than ever to make connections, get information, and access resources!

​TIES is a free conference that serves the needs and interests of transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming Virginians of all ages as well as their friends, family members, partners, and allies. Register today!
