WHO IS KRAMPUS?The legend of the devilish Krampus, though rooted in Germanic folklore, now spans centuries and continents. Said to roam the streets in early December in search of naughty children to punish, this foreboding figure wields a handful of birch sticks for whipping disobedient youngsters, carrying the most unruly off to the underworld on his back. Good children will instead be rewarded by St. Nicholas. Krampusnacht, a night of costumed revelry, is celebrated every 5 December with participants donning masks and clanging bells in a parade known as the Krampuslauf.
